We create the material basis for solid state batteries

Solid-state batteries are a promising concept for the further development of currently available batteries. The focus lies on the solid electrolyte properties in order to create safer cells with higher storage capacity and shorter charging times. The interdisciplinary FestBatt competence cluster works to produce, upscale and process suitable solid electrolytes for batteries of the future.

 

Solid-state batteries  are currently considered a promising further development of lithium-ion batteries and do not require any liquid electrolyte. They also promise a higher energy density compared to state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries. However, before solid-state batteries can be successfully commercialized, a large number of fundamental material issues and production technology challenges still need to be solved.

 

The aim of "FestBatt" is to produce and upscale suitable solid electrolytes in order to create the basis for the evaluation of the new materials by industry and application-oriented institutes. 21 work groups at 12 scientific institutions throughout Germany are working on this. Representatives of experienced industrial companies together with representatives of the scientific institutions form an industry advisory board, which closely monitors the project. The competence cluster is coordinated by the Center for Materials Research (ZfM) of the Justus Liebig University Gießen.
